Vanya, Yelena, Astrov and Sonya are all in love: with the past, with
ideals and with each other. They are not heroes or villains, simply
ordinary men and women trying to get by. Their behaviour is often
ridiculous, sometimes even verging on farce; but Chekhov’s
understanding of people is astonishing and he has infinite compassion
in the face of all our failings.
Neither static nor stuffy, Uncle Vanya alternates ripe
comic scenarios with moments of high-pitched melancholy, the whole
illuminated with a rich vein of optimism. This is theatre at its most
rewarding: an enduring world classic by the master that changed
theatre for ever.
