This funny, clever and absurd play has been described as a
‘comedy of terror’; and it’s not hard to see why it
has remained popular for over 40 years. By mixing a dazzling array of
references (to everything from English literature to probability
theory) with the broadest of broad humour, it has something for
everyone, from the intellectual to the man on the street, and to cap
it all is set on the fringes of one of the greatest plays ever
written: William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
The two hapless protagonists find ways to pass the time while dimly
aware that they are minor characters in a much larger story. By
reversing Shakespeare’s perspective, Stoppard brilliantly and
compassionately reveals that their destiny is every bit as tragic as
Hamlet’s.
