Comedies don’t come any blacker than this. A writer in an
unnamed totalitarian state is interrogated about his stories and their
similarities to child murders that are happening in the locality. This
is a Grimm’s Fairy Tale for grown ups and you’ll be unsure
whether to cry out with laughter or horror. You will never know if the
characters are being truthful or if what you see is actually
happening. This is a seriously disquieting nightmare of a play.
Described as ‘searingly brilliant’ and ‘profoundly
disturbing’, The Pillowman was the winner of the
Olivier Best Play Award in 2004.
This play contains scenes and language that could cause
offence and is definitely not suitable for children.
