Once a Catholic – always a Catholic! Or so they’d have us
believe... But Mary O’Malley’s hilarious comedy of life in
a 1950s London convent puts that claim on the line.
The play follows the exploits of class 5a at the Convent of Our Lady
of Fatima grammar school during their O Levels. The girls –
including innocent Mary Mooney, saucy Mary McGinty and pert Mary
Gallagher – encounter nuns, boys and Father Mullarkey and cope
with confused sermons about limbo, unforgiving sex education lessons
and the temptations of Elvis Presley. Bombarded by saints, sin and
suffering, the girls battle their way through adolescence with a
stubborn resolve not to give in. But can they make it through the year
with their regulation underwear and their sanity intact?
A most telling and funny piece of theatre, Once a
Catholic casts a caustic eye on the young girls’ growing
awareness of the world and their own sexuality. In an environment
where only Hell and Damnation await sinful thoughts, it’s teen
spirit versus the nuns.
The play contains some strong language.
