Little Voice spends all the time she can secluded in her room playing
her late father’s records, driven there by her imposing mother Mari
whose sole purpose in life is to find another man. When small-time
impresario Ray Say, Mari’s latest catch, hears her faultless
impersonations of various famous singers, he recognizes the potential
gold in her voice. He determines to exploit it but the whirlwind of
success breaks her and dashes his plans. Finally, she gains the
courage to speak and sing in her own voice.
Cartwright’s play has been described as a northern showbiz fairy
tale and is certainly enchanting, entertaining and at times
terrifying.
