Stories about eccentrics who buck convention and kick authority are
always a vicarious joy, especially when they make the rest of the
world look fools.
Alan Bennett tells a true story (well, more or less true) of an
elderly lady with pretensions to grandeur reduced to living in a van
in his back garden. It is very funny, acerbic and touching, styled
with fascinating fluidity. Bennett creates two Alan Bennetts, deploys
fanciful breaks with reality and makes no pretence that this is really
a play about writing a play about the fortuitous presence of an
uninvited, long-stay and extraordinary lodger.
