The setting is Victorian London. Bella Manningham is being slowly but
relentlessly driven mad by her husband. Why does she keep losing
things? What is the dark secret lurking in his past? Where does he
disappear to in the evenings? And, when Bella is alone, why does the
gaslight in her dingy parlour seem to periodically grow dim?
Written in 1938, and memorably filmed in 1944 with Ingrid Bergman and
Charles Boyer, Gaslight is everything a thriller should
be. It is a genuinely tense study of good and evil, and ultimately
unexpectedly moving.
