A violinist has multiple sclerosis, her conductor husband is drifting
away from her and she heads into severe depression. She consults a
psychiatrist but despises him for being unable to feel her pain.
Isolating herself, she listens despairingly to records of herself
playing music she will never recreate. An attempt at suicide is
thwarted by her maid. Eventually, she reconciles herself to reality
and accepts that life must go on.
Duet for One eerily echoes the tragic life of cellist
Jacqueline du Pré. It is not new but its theme is timeless: how
individuals cope when what they love most is lost to them.
