Until comparatively recently, the name of Alan Turing was unknown to
all but a few, and even now is hardly a household word. The founder of
computer science, and the Bletchley Park codebreaker who devised the
means of cracking the German navy’s Enigma code (arguably
contributing more than any other individual to the outcome of World
War II), Turing was also openly and unapologetically homosexual
at a time when this made him, in the eyes of the British law, a
criminal.
Hugh Whitemore’s play tells the very human story of a man
possessing a brilliant mind and also a body with ideas of its own.
