The darkly comic Beauty Queen of Leenane is set in the
remote Connemara Mountains of County Galway. Maureen, a middle-aged
spinster, lives in constant battle with her mother, Mag, who is a
selfish, self-pitying old woman, demanding instant attention to her
every whim and whining at every opportunity.
Escape comes in the form of handsome Ray, returning from England and
off to Boston, and hoping to take Maureen with him. But Mag interferes
once too often, setting in motion a train of events that are
simultaneously unexpected, comic, brutal, and horrifying.
A winner of four Tony awards, this play has brash humour, rich
language and inventive storytelling.
