Shaffer’s play is an irresistible, sophisticated, vulgar,
astonishing, powerful and gripping drama. At the court of Emperor
Joseph II in 18th century Vienna, two rival musicians become locked in
mortal combat. One, Salieri, is earnest, successful, clever, with a
belief in God, in righteousness and hard work, yet is possessed with a
cruel jealousy and the will and energy to destroy. The other, Mozart,
is a tactless, infantile, naive, fallible, peacock libertine,
outrageous in behaviour yet blessed with an acclaimed divine genius
who, despite composing an abundance of the most beautiful music ever
written, dies in neglect and penury.
