Getting involved in lights and sound
Lights and sound

The lighting and sound teams are the core of the Loft Theatre Company’s technical department. They are responsible for all the technical support for our shows, which includes designing, rigging and operating the lighting and sound for each production. On some productions this can also include pyrotechnics, projection and other special effects.

How it works

Each production has light and sound designers. They work closely with the director to create schemes that will complement and support the production. Once the design is agreed they work together with the rest of the lighting and sound team to translate the design from paper to the stage in the process called ‘rigging’. Towards the end of the rehearsal process there will be a ‘technical rehearsal’ where all the lighting and sound cues and effects will be rehearsed with the actors. During performances the team operate the lights and sound under the control of the stage manager.

Commitment and reward

Working in the technical team means you can be involved in a fundamental way from day one as a play comes to life, or if you have less time you can operate on some show nights. As your experience builds you will be encouraged to progress to designing a lighting or sound plot and given all the necessary support.
