Getting Involved
On Stage

Anyone involved in theatre will tell you how enjoyable and fulfilling it can be.

Whatever your interests and abilities, theatre allows you to exercise your creativity. At the Loft, we are always on the lookout for fresh talent, on stage and off. If you are interested in joining our team, we would love to hear from you.

Joining the Crew

Technical Operation

If you would like to join the team and help produce and stage a production, there is a wide choice of activities, including stage management, lighting and sound, set design and construction, wardrobe and props, box office, bar and coffee duty, and front of house management.

There are also opportunities in the marketing department, including press relations and the creation of advertising and publicity material. Email Michael Rayns for further information.

Construction/Rigging

We hold at least three open meetings per season and newcomers with interests in backstage/production activities are very welcome. You can take a backstage tour, be ‘shown the ropes’ and, if you wish, meet the relevant personnel to discuss any aspects of the theatre.

The dates of the open meetings (which coincide with auditions for those that want to act) will be publicised in our programme, in the local press, around the theatre and on this website. See Auditions for the latest information.

Joining the Cast

Rehearsal

We hold at least three open auditions per season and newcomers are very welcome. Everyone has the opportunity to audition for roles; audition dates will be publicised in our programme, in the local press, around the theatre and on this website. See Auditions for the latest information.

Main House Shows
The Loft currently produces nine Main House shows per season. Each show rehearses for six weeks, four nights per week, and runs for ten performances. Rehearsals start at 7:30 pm and usually finish by 10:30 pm. Nights off are rare but one or two may be allowed with prior agreement.

Studio Shows
In addition, there are up to six Studio productions, rehearsing by arrangement three times per week, with a five night performance run.

Loft Extras
Occasionally, short entertainments called Loft Extras are held after the Friday and Saturday performances of a Main House run; rehearsals for these are arranged on an ad hoc basis.

Production Support
Actors are also encouraged to take part in other aspects of the theatre’s work to provide essential support for other productions.

The commitment at the Loft is substantial but the results are worth it.

Social Activities

The theatre is always busy, but there are also occasional planned social events, which are announced in show programmes and on this website (see the News page).

The bar is also open from 7pm on performance nights and ‘on demand’ on non-show nights. The first and last nights of a show always bring members together for a party atmosphere.
