Sex and the Assembly – Friday 1st October 2004
Sex and the Assembly

Sex and the Assembly (Ekklesiazousai)
by Aristophanes

New translation by Carl Mueller
Directed by Hugh Denard
Coordinated by James Claridge

It is Athens, sometime between the 5th and 4th Century BC. The men rule the city and the women are in the same category as slaves. However, something is about to change. The women unite, revolt, dress up as men and take over the Ekklesia (the Athenian democratic assembly). They advocate a communist Utopia marked by community property, community feeding, and, not least (at least not in an Aristophanes play), community sex!

A host of Loft regulars brought this bawdy classical comedy to life in an evening of drama, laughs, drinks and, did we mention, sex?

The players

Ann Williams, Kathy Crawshaw, Angie Collins, Roy Donoghue, David Draper, Mike Crawshaw, Anne Houston, Judy Murdoch, Anne Wood, Helen Wall, Philippa Semper, Michael Bibb, Lauren Boswell, Vanessa Comer and Dawn Morris.
